How to Move Your Antivirus Subscription to a New Computer (Norton, McAfee, Malwarebytes)

How to Move Your Antivirus Subscription to a New Computer (Norton, McAfee, Malwarebytes)

You bought a new laptop, or your old desktop finally gave up. The question that follows almost immediately is: what happens to the antivirus subscription you already paid for? The good news is that Norton, McAfee and Malwarebytes all let you move an active license to a new computer. The less good news is that each one does it a little differently, and a wrong step can leave the old machine still “using” a seat you need on the new one.

This guide explains, in plain English, how to transfer your antivirus subscription to a new PC or Mac in the United States, what to do with the old device, and how to avoid paying for a second license you do not need.

First, understand how device “seats” work

Modern security subscriptions are not tied to one specific machine forever. Instead you buy a number of device seats, for example 1, 3, 5 or 10 devices, for a fixed term such as one year. Each computer, phone or tablet you install the software on takes one seat. When you remove the software from a device, or remove that device from your online account, the seat is freed and can be used again.

That is why transferring a license is really a two-step job: release the seat on the old computer, then sign in on the new one. If you skip the first step, the vendor’s account page will often show the old PC as still protected, and a single-device plan will refuse to install anywhere else.

Before you start: three things to collect

    • Your account email and password for the vendor (Norton account, McAfee account or Malwarebytes My Account). The subscription lives in that account, not on the computer.
    • Your product key or order email. You may not need it if the subscription is already attached to your account, but it is useful if you ever have to prove the purchase. If you bought from AntivirusPoint and cannot find the email, use the lost license page.
    • Access to the old computer, even for ten minutes. Uninstalling there is the cleanest way to free the seat. If the old machine is dead, you can still remove it from your online account, which is covered below.

How to move Norton 360 to a new computer

Step 1: Free the seat on the old PC

Sign in at my.norton.com, open My Subscriptions or Device Security, find the old computer in the device list and choose Manage License and then Remove. Norton immediately returns that seat to your subscription. If you still have the old PC, you can also uninstall Norton from Windows Settings, Apps, or use the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool for a clean removal.

Step 2: Install on the new PC or Mac

On the new computer, sign in to the same Norton account, click Download under your subscription and run the installer. Because the subscription is already attached to your account, you do not need to type the key again. Once installation finishes, open Norton and confirm the subscription shows the correct number of days remaining.

One Norton-specific detail: many Norton subscriptions ask you to keep a payment method on file for automatic renewal. Moving to a new computer does not change that setting; you manage renewal in your account, not on the device.

How to move McAfee Total Protection or McAfee AntiVirus

Step 1: Remove the old device from your account

Sign in at home.mcafee.com and open My Account, then Devices. Each protected device is listed by name. Select the old computer and choose Remove or Deactivate. McAfee frees the seat right away. If you prefer, uninstall McAfee from the old computer first; the MCPR removal tool from McAfee is the thorough option when a normal uninstall leaves pieces behind.

Step 2: Add the new device

Still in My Account, click Add Device (or Protect more devices), choose the device type and send the download link to yourself or download directly. Run the installer on the new machine and sign in when prompted. McAfee will list the new computer under Devices within a few minutes.

If you have a multi-device plan such as a McAfee Total Protection 5-device subscription, you may not even need to remove the old PC first, as long as you have a seat free. Removing it is still good practice so the old machine does not keep receiving updates on your account.

    How to move Malwarebytes Premium

Step 1: Deactivate the old computer

Malwarebytes manages devices from My Account at my.malwarebytes.com. Open your subscription, find the old device and click Deactivate. You can also open the Malwarebytes app on the old computer, go to Settings, Account, and choose Deactivate license, which frees the seat even without a web login.

Step 2: Activate on the new computer

Download Malwarebytes from the official site on the new computer, install it, then either sign in with your Malwarebytes account or click Activate license and paste the license key from your order email. The app switches from the free scanner to Premium and shows your renewal date.

What if the old computer is broken, stolen or already wiped?

You do not need the old device to recover the seat. All three vendors let you remove a device from the online account, which is exactly what the Step 1 instructions above do. If the device list does not show the old PC at all, the seat is already free and you can simply install on the new computer.

If the installer still says you have no seats left, wait a few minutes, sign out and back in to the vendor account, and try again. Device lists sometimes take a short while to refresh. If it still fails, contact the vendor’s support with your account email; they can release a stuck seat on their side.

Common mistakes that cost people money

    • Buying a second subscription instead of transferring. If your current plan has months left, move it. Buy a new key only when the term is nearly over or you need more seats.
    • Installing the trial that came with the new PC on top of your paid plan. New Windows laptops often ship with a 30-day McAfee or Norton trial. Uninstall the trial, then install from your own account so the paid subscription is the one that is active.
    • Running two antivirus products at once. Windows Security steps aside automatically for most third-party suites, but two full suites together cause slowdowns and false alarms. Keep one.
    • Using a key from the wrong region. A key sold for the UK or Europe may not activate on a US account. When you buy, choose a product clearly labeled USA or USA/Canada. Our guide on how to spot a genuine antivirus license key covers this in detail.
    • Forgetting the phone and tablet. Multi-device plans cover Android and iOS too. After the computer is done, add your phone from the same account page so you use the seats you paid for.

When it makes more sense to buy a new license

Sometimes a new computer is the right moment to change plans rather than transfer. If your single-device subscription is expiring soon and the household now has two laptops and three phones, a 5-device or 10-device plan is usually cheaper than several single licenses. Likewise, if you are switching from Windows to Mac, check that your current product supports macOS; most Norton 360 and McAfee Total Protection plans do, while some older PC-only editions do not.

You can compare current one-year and multi-year options in the AntivirusPoint antivirus category. Every listing states the edition, term, device count and region, and keys are delivered by email so you can activate the same day your new computer arrives.

    Quick checklist

    1. Sign in to your Norton, McAfee or Malwarebytes account and note how many seats are in use.
    2. Remove or deactivate the old computer from the account (and uninstall it there if you still can).
    3. Uninstall any pre-loaded trial antivirus on the new computer.
    4. Download the installer from your account and sign in on the new computer.
    5. Confirm the subscription end date and device count in the app.
    6. Add your phone or tablet if your plan has spare seats.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I transfer my antivirus license to a new computer for free?

Yes. Norton, McAfee and Malwarebytes all allow you to move an active subscription to a replacement computer at no charge. You release the seat from the old device in your online account and install on the new one.

Do I need my product key to reinstall on a new PC?

Usually not. Once a key has been redeemed, the subscription is stored in your vendor account, and signing in on the new computer is enough. Keep the key and order email anyway in case support asks for proof of purchase.

Will transferring reset my subscription end date?

No. The end date stays the same. Moving the license changes which device is protected, not how long the subscription lasts.

Can I move a Windows license to a Mac?

Most current Norton 360 and McAfee Total Protection plans are multi-platform and can be used on macOS. Malwarebytes Premium has separate Windows and Mac products in some plans, so check your account before you assume it will work.

The old computer is gone and the vendor still shows it as active. What now?

Remove the device from the vendor’s online account page. If it will not release, contact the vendor’s support with your account email and they can clear the seat for you.
